Cheesy Cabbage Casserole

2 teaspoons salt
1 medium, sliced onion
4 cups sliced cabbage
2 quarts water
1 cup grated American cheese
1-1/2 cups cracker crumbs
1 cup milk

Put salt, onion and cabbage in water. Boil just enough to wilt cabbage. Drain and place half of hot cabbage in a generously buttered baking dish. Cover with a layer of 1/3 cup grated American cheese, then top with 1/2 cup cracker crumbs. Repeat all 3 layers, ending with cracker crumbs. Dot with butter and carefully pour in milk to cover crumbs. Bake in 400 deg. oven for 25-30 minutes, or until casserole is bubbling and lightly browned. Can be frozen by omitting the milk until ready to bake.
