Spicy Orange Beets

2 (16 oz.) can sliced beets, drained
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon grated orange rind
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/8 teaspoon pepper
2/3 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
 
Combine brown sugar and next 5 ingredients in a large saucepan; gradually add orange juice, stirring until smooth.  Stir in butter; bring to a boil, stirring constantly.  Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly.  Add beets; cook until thoroughly heated.  Sprinkle with chives before serving.
 
Yields 4 to 6 servings.
