Blackberry Jam Cake

This is my mom's recipe.  It's one of those recipes that's better if made at least a day ahead of when you want to serve it.

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon cocoa
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon mace
1 cup blackberry jam
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup sour milk
2 cups flour

Cream shortening.  Add sugar, unbeaten eggs, spices, and jam.  Mix soda in sour milk and add to mixture.  Stir in flour.  Bake in moderate oven (350 deg.) 45-50 minutes until it tests done.

*Note:  Very good with caramel frosting.
