Old-Fashioned Lace Cookies

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Dash nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon soda
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup light molasses
1 teaspoon lemon extract

Sift flour, measure, and resift 3 times with next 5 ingredients. Melt butter with sugar and molasses over boiling water and remove from heat. Add dry ingredients and lemon extract and beat until smooth; let stand over hot water for a few minutes.

Drop by half-teaspoonfuls 3 inches apart onto a cookie sheet that has been greased and dusted with flour. Bake in a moderately hot slow oven (325 deg.) for 12 to 15 minutes. Cool on pan 1 or 2 minutes before removing from pan to cake rack with a spatula.

Makes 5 dozen cookies.

*Note: The cookies are pliable when warm and can be shaped with the hands into cups or ruffles, or rolled around the handle of a wooden spoon.
